Jesus Can Conquer Your Spirit of Fearfulness

Next week my little brother Sam leaves for a trip to Jamaica to do missions with Grace Senior Youth and YWAM. This brings back a lot of memories of my grade 12 year and my trip to L.A. to do the same thing. My biggest memory of my trip (not my best memory) is that I carried a huge spirit of fearfulness. I was scared to open my mouth and speak life into people I met on the street, subway, or fellow team members.

The focus of our trip to L.A. was to talk to the locals, to bring joy to peoples lives, and to spread the love of Jesus! Yet my spirit of fearfulness got in my way when I decided to not rely on the power and strength that God promises us (Isaiah 41:10). To give you an example we were told to sit next to strangers on the subway so we could get an opportunity to talk to them, I purposely was one of the last ones on the subway so that the other team members could sit next to strangers and I would get to sit alone or next to someone I knew. At the end of the trip I had only talked to 1 or 2 people, I did not get the experience that I was so excited for before we went.

The reason I share this is because I want to give this group of grad 11 & 12’s a chance to have an amazing trip where they rely completely on God, because that will give them the most meaningful trip!

You will feel tired during your mission work, but God promises to renew your strength in Isaiah 40:31. Rely on Gods strength and not your own, He has an abundance and wants to support you on this trip. The devil will try to interfere with your work (1 Peter 5:8), so spend time every day praying against the works of the devil in your life, because God has power of him and when you call on the name Jesus, Satan has no power over you.

Finally, I want to make a suggestion for everyone going on this missions trip or any other missions trip. Take a day or two to fast before your missions trip. God will reveal a lot to you during this time (Acts 13:2-3). He will reveal truths to you through the time you spend in prayer and study of the Bible.

If you are like me and only get the chance to build into one soul I have a quote from C.S. Lewis for you:

The salvation of a single soul is more important than the production or preservation of all the epics and tragedies in the world.

Find Rest My Soul

God, you have made us for yourself, and our hearts are restless till they find their rest in you. – Augustine

Until a few years ago when I thought about God giving me “rest” or “sheltering me in the storm of life” I thought of it purely in a physical sense. This lead me to a lot of disappointments in God, I was not happy, because I thought that he was going to make life easy, but I was wrong. God’s plan for us is not an easy life, in fact he says other wise in the Bible, but God promises us a different type of rest. “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden light.” Matthew 11:28-30 (emphasis mine).

What Jesus is talking about there is a rest for our souls. God has given us the Bible for a couple of reasons, to get to know him, to understand that Jesus died for us, and to know that we have eternal life just to name a few. Out of all the things I read in the Bible, most of it is comforting. The New Testament is all about Jesus; what He did, What he is doing, and What he will do. He was born, He lived as a human man, and died on the cross for our sins. Then, He sent theĀ apostlesĀ out to make more disciples. The most comforting of these is that He died for us so that we could have eternal life in Heaven, if that is not comforting to you I can’t think of anything that would be.

The comfort and rest that Jesus offers us is not one that will fully be available in this world, we will get a taste of it for sure. An example of that would be, if you would lose your job, but continued to have faith in Jesus, you would find peace and rest in knowing that He has more plans for you, you just need to listen and follow His lead. We will fully receive this reward in Heaven.

Until that time lets remember Psalm 23:4 “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
